Welcome to my (surprising) Blog!

By leeannjordan

Welcome to my blog, focusing on golf (which I cannot believe, and will my friends please stop laughing now!), with occasional forays into related topics.

One of the most wonderful (and unsettling) things about life, is we just never know what might be around the next corner. And at some point, most of us learn to “never say never.”

So it is with me and golf. At one time an activity I considered to be a) boring, b)slow, and – did I say c) boring, it was a sport I was certain I would “never” take an interest in…ever!

But then a confluence of events in my life led me to an almost urgent desire to learn to play golf.  It was as though a spankin’ new Titleist ball had smacked me in the head, leaving me with one single thought: I must learn this game!

The instructor who would lead me into what has now become a true journey, and to whom I refer as “Golf Yoda” is David Geier. David is a local golfer of some renown, author of books and articles about golf and life, and a real deep thinker. While my initial plan was to take, say – three or four lessons – he sees a much bigger picture. During our first session – during which I never even picked up a golf club – we talked a lot about my motivations for getting into the game.

And I told him what I knew to be true: I wanted to challenge myself beyond boundaries that I had set in place for much of my adult life. I wanted to experience some of the psychological benefits of the game, take up an enjoyable physical activity that I could pursue for a lifetime, and along the way learn something brand new, difficult and occasionally inspiring.

Well. That was February of 2007. It has been quite a road – sometimes bumpy – since then. In this blog I’ll share with you the experiences I’ve had, coming into this as a complete amateur, where I’ve been and where I’m going. Feel free to comment as you see fit, and tell me about your own golf journey. Until then, here’s a thought my Golf Yoda provided that I am forced to remember frequently: “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly in the pursuit of excellence.”

golf:keep your head down, keep your eye on the back of the ball, hesitate for a micro-second on the back swing
always address the ball correctly:”hello ball!”

hope management doesn’t figure out that you ladies have so much fun on the noon news that you guys would do it for free(almost)….

I can’t believe that you only got one response after that brutally honest letter about something as difficult as golf. I previously responded but I’m not very computer savvy and you probably didn’t even get the message. So here goes my version of golf. From what I’ve heard it stands for, (let me rephrase that from it stands to it stood) gentlemen only ladies forbidden. That is so chauvinistic that even an Italian-American man can hardly believe that someone would call a sport -is golf really a sport?-something that only a man can do. That’s hilarious to me because I expected Lee Jordan to be driving a Formula One car or something really fast and exciting. I’m sorry about my lack of knowledge or love for the sport of golf but I wish you all the luck and hole in one’s in the world. Go get ‘em Lee! Oh yeah I forgot that I did golf once and actually did hit my friend right on the top of his bald head as he was walking over a hill and I could never do that again if I tried. He was so mad that he didn’t talk to me the rest of the day. Like I could do that on purpose. It was funny though. Again, good luck and stay out of the sand Lee! Sincerely, Dan

After reading my message to you on this page I did sound like your newfound sport was something non-exciting and I’m really truly sorry for that. I obviously know nothing about golf so I don’t have the right to comment at all about it. I just know that for watching you on television that you seem to be a perfectionist. I’m sure that whatever you feel like doing you will do it right. The best of luck to you Lee and every other woman that’s trying to play one of the hardest sports to conquer known to man and woman!! Your fan Dan
